Correct Gid. There was an attempt to make Mao Zedong thought the only way to think and anything else is subversive.

But some of Chinese culture deserved to be destroyed. I'm talking about foot-binding and elements of the culture that just didn't respect women. Say what you will about communism but Mao really took the everyone in a socialist revolution is equal thing seriously. Woman had a status indistinguishable from men.

Sadly this is beginning to change as materialism takes hold and how pretty a wife you marry is matched by the amount of money you make.

From my understanding, Chinese culture on the mainland took the biggest hit during the Cultural Revolution, when it was intended to be stamped out and replaced with communist ideology. By the time Deng Xiaoping promoted going the capitalist route and communist ideology was thrown aside, the old cultural values and norms were no longer there to fill the vacuum and sustain functional relationships, and you just had a "fuck your neighbor" approach.
