NATO Isn’t Coming

We killed as many of them as we could,” he said. “But where are our friends?”

It was the question of the day. As Russian forces massed Sunday on two fronts, Georgians were heading south with whatever they could carry. When they met Western journalists, they all said the same thing: Where is the United States? When is NATO coming?

I’ve been skeptical of any direct Western involvement since the invasion started. Georgia made a gamble, thought the West would surely come, but I don’t think we will. We’ve put off NATO membership for so long for the Georgians because we didn’t want to piss off the Russians, I don’t think our leaders want a direct confrontation either. I predict we will only enter the fray if the Russians delve too far into the south, similar to when China came pouring out of the woodwork when the US got too far north during the Korean war. But the Russians are smart; they probably won’t go too far south.  Until then, we’ll play the “wait and condemn” card while trying to reach a diplomatic solution, which may include removal of South Ossetia from Georgian control.

We shall see.
